Heathrow is the UK's busiest airport and viewed as being the 'gateway to the world' from London. Millions of passengers fly through Heathrow every year, and the airport's design and location has been chosen to facilitate onward travel and make it as hassle free as possible. There are various to and from travel options to look for:

Bus and coach services
Local and national bus and coach services, including National Express, link up with various UK destinations and are clearly marked with maps from each terminal. Over 500 destinations are serviced by National Express coaches and other operators including the Oxford bus. Additionally, there are Railair coaches which connect to the national rail network at Reading, Watford Junction and Woking.

Coach tickets are available from the Heathrow Central bus station travel centre. They can also be booked in advance through the coach operators. Local bus tickets can be bought on the service itself and destinations include Thames Valley and West London. These are part of the London transport network and cost around £2 for an adult single.

Coaches can be picked up from all terminals. The central bus station is between the terminals 1-3. There's a National Express desk in terminal 5. There are also luxury coach and bus options which connect to Woking, Feltham, Reading and Watford.

By car
Heathrow Airport is just fifteen miles to the west of Central London and is easily accessible by the M25 and M4 motorways. Terminals 1-3 are situated close together at the airport's central site, and drivers will exit off the M4 at J4, or from the M25 at J15. There are plenty of signs to follow, or a GPS system can be programmed with the terminal postcodes - TW6 3XA for Terminal 4 for example. Terminal 5 has its own access road, from J14 or the M25. Once there you'll find a range of London Heathrow airport parking, from short to long stay and valet stay. There are also nearby petrol stations. Tickets for parking can either be bought in advance, online, for offsite airport parking, or can be purchased at ticketing meters for onsite shorter stay options. Advance purchases tend to secure better rates however, and offsite car parking is cheaper - with free transfers being offered every ten minutes to the terminal door.

Passing the time whilst waiting for your flight
Waiting for flights can be a dull business, however Heathrow Airport has a fantastic range of diversions and shops and restaurants to while away the waiting period! There are various restaurants and snack bars to choose from - everything from sushi bars to fast food restaurants and sit-down dining, and there are also plenty of famous high street names and designer outlets for shopping. Duty free is also a big draw and airlines have their own lounges for relaxing in - these are available for a charge, and have extra relaxing seats, refreshments, wireless internet access and newspapers to pass the time with
