Parking in the city costs a small fortune in parking fees, and not parking in the designated areas means high fines anyway. So how can drivers get around these pitfalls and still park where they want to? Well, the sad truth is that they can't really.

Sometimes, parking in a car park may be your only option, when there is no designated parking outside of one. Lots of areas have a council car park which is often cheaper than some of the larger private car parking lots, but council car parks do have certain restrictions, such as length of stay, overnight stays and height restrictions.

As you will usually have to buy a ticket to display in your car, or collect a ticket on arrival and pay when you leave, make sure you display your ticket clearly, park correctly and don't overstay your time limit and you will avoid a fine.

When you use a car park which asks for your ticket on your departure, make sure you keep it safe and don't lose it, as a lost ticket could end up costing you the price of a whole days parking.

If you park outside of a car park, the make sure again that you are parked correctly, have paid whatever may need to be paid and that you do not overstay the allocated time period. Never park in a restricted area. Fines start at about £30, and only go up. If you don't pay the fine on time, it will become more expensive and you may eventually even have to appear in a courtroom, so it's worth paying up on time.

Another reason to obey the rules of the road when it comes to parking is that you can save plenty of cash in the long run by obeying the law. Not only will you avoid fines and the risk of your car being towed and impounded, but some car insurance providers do background checks and a high number of fines could even mean higher motor insurance premiums for you.

The National Parking Adjudication Service can be appealed to if you believe you have been unfairly fined, so do not confront the traffic official or your traffic department about the fine.
